Relationships

Relationships are an incredibly messy thing. Why on earth would we want to knowingly put ourselves in a position to be hurt, embarrassed, disappointed, and angered? What is it that is within us calling us always into these messy situations?

We were created for relationship. God wanted to have a relationship with His creation, so He placed it within the heart of man to yearn for connection. That worked really well until the Fall. With sin came a world of pain. Unfortunately the longing for connection is not gone. Knowing the pain is inevitable, we still find ourselves longing for love, acceptance, acknowledgment and connection with another soul.

The absolutely wonderful thing about relationships, though, is that, surprisingly, they work. The pain, disappointment, frustration, and anger are always overshadowed by the astounding occurrence of one heart reaching out and touching another. Just like the pain of birth, the anguish of human relationship is often swept away on a tide of longing for just one more taste of connection.

Perhaps those sweet moments are cracks in the wall between earth and heaven. For a moment the veil is ripped and the sweet goodness of eternity with God pours through. It is enough to make you drunk. And so like the alcoholic that turns again and again to the very thing tearing him apart, we are suckers for a taste of the eternal. We reach out. We hope and believe and love and it is a very good thing.
